Umbrellas

Every country has it's own umbrella-habits.
In Korea most people have several umbrellas in different shapes, sizes and colors. Umbrellas are used in spring when it's drizzling, in summer when it's pouring, when the sun is shining in autumn, and the snow falling in winter.
Today it rained cats and dogs in Heidelberg, but there were few people with umbrellas on the streets and even fewer with umbrellas that wouldn't be black. And I missed the colorful patchwork of South Korean streets.

  1. Two pink umrellas, one blue, one ugly green and one beautiful beige and green spotted on my trip to Poznan today.
Your last post made me think. I was quite proud of Poznan people for the lack of black :) But few umrellas on quite a few hundred people around, during quite a rainy weather, is certainly not much, and Polwiejska (the biggest, most popular car-free-shop-full street in Poznan) still looked more like a grey coat than a "colorful patchwork". Maybe the "umrella-habits" is more a continet than a country thing? While Asians are in love with their colorful umbrellas, Europeans despise them, and prefer to get wet rather to get themselves handy covers over their heads.
And one more thing. Being quite a fan of my blue umbrella while in China, be it September rain or July heat, in Poland I suddenly started to consider even the most tiny compact umbrella to be too big, too heavy, too uncomfortable, thus superflous. I did get quite wet today. And what would you say about that?

  2. I know what you mean, the same goes for me - I luved my umbrellas in Korea, but in Europe they don't seem handy any more. I think people are less afraid of weather in Europe. You know, in Asia wind, sun, rain all that is considered as bad for your skin or health, so people are really careful to shield themselves from the environment and umbrellas are just part of that cover.
Personally, I haven't used an umbrella for the past half a year after coming from Korea - instead i got a good waterproof coat. However for Christmas, my cousin gave me the most wonderful umbrella of all - it is really tiny so I keep loosing it in my bag constantly, but it is bendy at the same time so I can use it also on windy days. The umbrella is now all the time with me, and when it starts raining i open it and all the pretty colors and patterns over my head make my day brighter :)
